The Northern Territory can offer more than just a job. We offer a life-long career and professional success. We also believe that education and learning are key elements to support career development - whether that be through experience, mentorship, education or awards.

There’s specialty opportunities as a nurse or midwife in one of three career paths:

  • Clinical specialisation
  • Education and research
  • Management

The entry roles of nursing and midwifery, RUSONs and RUSOMs care for their clients within procedural and policy guidelines. They also work in a team under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or midwife.

RUSONs and RUSOMs must have the skills to build therapeutic and professional relationships with individuals, as well as with families, groups and communities.

Being a nursing or midwifery graduate with less than 6 months of experience gives you access to our 12-month support program.

Our program supports your transition from undergraduate student to graduate health professional in an easy-to-follow structured format. And best of all, it consolidates your clinical knowledge and skills. Annual recruitment commences mid-year for multiple intake dates across all regions.

Find out everything you need to know about being a graduate in the Territory here.

Enrolled nurses, registered nurses and registered midwives who have less than 12-month experience and aren’t eligible for a graduate program can apply for our new to practice nurse or midwife program.

Just like our graduate program, this program helps you become a graduate health professional with our simple yet structured format. It also consolidates your clinical knowledge and skills.

If you’re an enrolled nurse, registered nurse or registered midwife with more than 12 months of experience, you can start searching for your dream job within your speciality area across the Territory.

We are constantly looking for enthusiastic, passionate healthcare workers. So don’t forget to register your interest here. This is reviewed weekly, and positions are filled continuously throughout the year.

For enrolled nurses, registered nurses and registered midwives with more than 2 years of experience, we offer several transition programs that allow you to gain experience and skills in your chosen field. These positions are typically advertised throughout the year.

These programs include:

  • Transition to remote nursing
  • Transition to mental health
  • Transition to emergency medicine

These employed model programs are for registered nurses and midwives with more than 12 months of experience to help them specialise in an area of choice. These positions are typically advertised annually in line with the University’s key dates for enrolment.

This 12 to 24-month program provides variable funding support to complete a specialty postgraduate qualification - all while you work.

During this program, you’ll learn more about:

  • Intensive care
  • Emergency medicine
  • Neonatal intensive care
  • Maternity (leading to midwifery registration)
  • Perioperative
  • Renal
